If cover versions were banned from airplay the silence on the radio would be deafening. I don't mind rap songs using backing tracks but whole songs are being ripped off and not being improved on.

I agree partly with CyberCom -- corporations control what you hear on the radio. However, with the Internet radio and sattelite radio this is changing. There are plenty of original bands, but it isn't easy to come up with something totally new, and it IS ok to cover a song, just try to do your own version of it, like Jimi Hendrix did with Bob Dylan's "All Along the Watchtower". If Hendrix had played it the same way Bob Dylan did it neve would have become a hit in its own right with a completely different version. Another example would be the way Van Halen covered Roy Orbison's "Pretty Woman" or the Kinks' "You Really Got Me".

This is down to the corporate stranglehold on the music industry by the big players, Sony, EMI etc. They have no imagination and even less intelligence. Plus, added to this is the lack of any indie record labels, so anyone original is strangled at birth by the global music industry. Would we get an Ian Dury, a Captain Beefheart, a Nirvana nowadays? I think not.

I have said that for years. It's not only pop music but country music as well, and for that matter hip hop. It seems nobody can write their own songs anymore. I have said that originality went away in the early 90's.

The problem in pop is not only the prevalence of covers, but of synthesizers, and "boy bands" and strumpets like Britney. This has invaded country a bit as well.
