I am going to get counceling for this, but anyone have any tips on how to stop? I have done this sense I was very young. I hate it!! It makes me feel like I have no real memory and I question everything I "remember" because I have no idea if it actually happened or if I am just making it up in my head. What can I do?

No, seriously, I called 3 councelors in my insurance network this morning - just waiting for them to call back. I don't lie about EVERYTHING. Jeez.

Go to a therapist, not a website.

Goodluck on taking the first step
you need to get out of this
i really do think councelling would be the only way, you could try like the same way people stop swearing, slap yourself everytime you lie, or put money in a "lie jar" or you could make yourself tell the person that you just lied after you relised what u said..
people will start to know , and its not a very nice thing when you find out someone lies all the time
i used to have a friend like this

First - admit to everyone that you ever lied to that you are a liar and are sorry for your mistakes. Tell them all your lies - or that you can't remember them all. Then you will either work out your problems, or you will move on. Once you get this off of your chest, you can move on and become a better person. Seriously. You'll gain so much more confidence by telling ppl you are sorry and that you are done with it.

Usually it helps to figure out what motivates you to lie. If you figure out why you're lying, you can begin reversing the problem.
Now then I used to have a similar problem of compulsive lying but it lied in a philosophical problem in my head more so than some sort of mental impairment. My problem was I couldn't figure out what truth actually was. It seemed then (and to an extent still seems) to be very relative. I would ask, "What is truth, really?" and though it would seem easy to ground truth in fact it was not so easy for me. Facts can be skewed by perspective, and perspective is what we use to see the world, thus you can see my problem I think.
Any how, I hope you fix your problem.
Best of luck,
Sebastion

Counseling is REALLY the only answer. Telling us you are GOING to get it, is probably a lie. Get it.
Your secret is known by most who know you already, so don't think you are hiding all that much. The professionals may be able to help you and your life will be transformed into a freedom that you can't imagine now.

Its good that you 've realized the problem and are taking the professional help for this. follow strictly as you are told to do and i'm sure you would soon be able to control yourself.be alert all the time .listen properly what others are saying and
since you 've now councillor you can take his help to interpret.

i think lying is like stuttering..you just have to slow down and think. if you lie, admit it to the person. start correcting yourself and im sure you'll work out of it. as long as you admit them when they are lies and you know you have a problem, it should be all good. most people will think this is weird, but if they are friends, they will deal with it.

Healing can only begin when you realize you are lying to yourself, which that itself is a lie and must be suppressed. Deep...real deep here...

just change your promises to S.M.A.R.T. (specific, measureable, attainable, realistic, time-bound) goals and stick to it like metal fused together, write everything down in a notebook or more than one and keep it organized so you can find things.
