Zoe is right here. A pleco will get along with anything that shares his water chemistry requirements, but your knife fish won't be happy together. They become territorial as adults, but more importantly, they have poor eyesight and navigate by using a mild electrical field (you can't feel it and it won't hurt you or the other fish in the tank). If you have more than one electric-producing fish in the tank (elephant nose is another species, so you shouldn't get one of these either) the second "signal" will be confusing to them.
These fish like lots of places to hide, muted lighting and lots of plants. They LOVE bloodworms 9frozen, not freeze-dried) and will take them from your fingers once they settle in.

Plecostomus's don't bother any fish....I've had one from birth for more then 10 yrs. He was 12 inches and I also had(have) a 55 gallon tank! he up and died one day for no reason, that i know of...?
I then got another one, and he is now 7inches long...either one never picked on any of my fish!
I have tiny gold fish now and he just sticks too his wooden tree and just hangs out! ONLY comes out when he thinks no one is around...
I WOULD think NOT! but too be safe..would ask someone at pet store!

I've never seen a plecostomus grumpy at any other fish. As long as there's enough stuff to clean, I think he should be fine. I have mine in a tank with a lot of community fish, rainbow shark, and 2 albino cory cats. They're all happy.
Edit: They shouldn't grow out of a 55 gal tank FAST. Mine took a very long time to grow an inch. You could also look at it as an investment, once they get big, you can sell them for more money.

No, they won't work. Black ghost knife fish are really best off if kept solitary. Also, your 55 gallon tank is simply not big enough for a BGK, let alone TWO BGKs and a pleco.
BGKs are very finicky, delicate fish; if you want to get involved in keeping them, you will need at least a 125 gallon tank to keep one.

Be careful, my plecto ate 2 of my goldfish, even though they were in a big enough tank. Check to see if they are compatible at the store

They probbaly would for a while, but they and the pleco will out grow the tank before too long. As that happens and as they get older they will begin to fight more and more until the fighting and stress kills one of them. Knowing that is coming soon, I would suggest you put them together that way personally.
