counting from your last menstrual cycle

There is no safe time of the month to have sex; there is always a risk of pregnancy no matter when you have sex, just as there is always a risk of STD's.

There are however only a few days during your menstrual cycle when you can get pregnant – women are only fertile for around 30% of their menstrual cycle, this is the day of ovulation as well as a few days beforehand when there is fertile quality cervical mucus present, it is biologically impossible to get pregnant at any other time of your menstrual cycle.

Typically a woman's menstrual cycle is 28 days, the first day being the first day of true bleeding during menstruation, and typically ovulation occurs between days 12-16 with around 5 days prior when she is producing cervical quality cervical mucus in which the sperm can survive up to 5 days.

Needless to say however unless you know specifically when these days are then you should not have sex without using another form of contraception, methods such as the rhythm method in which the fertile period is guessed going on previous menstrual cycle observations is also not a reliable form of birth control – basically the rhythm method uses the typical menstrual cycle model I gave above, so it assumes a woman ovulates on day 14, where as this is different from woman to women, thus why it is unreliable.

The only way in which to accurately know when you are fertile or not fertile in order to prevent pregnancy is to use fertility awareness or natural family planning methods; these are around 98% effective with perfect use. These methods are normally methods in which you track your temperature, cervical mucus and cervical position on a daily basis to determine the exact times you are fertile or not fertile. These methods are highly effective, however take a while to learn and require commitment from the users.

If you do not know the answer to this question you shouldn't be having sex to begin with as this is basic biology that needs to be understood before becoming sexually active, if you are not using methods such as fertility awareness method then there is no way to tell when you are fertile or not so other birth control methods are required to avoid pregnancy, condoms are essential to prevent STD's.

Safe sex, meaning using a condom? Anytime!!! But if you're talking unprotected sex and not get pregnant, there is no guarantee. People who use the rhythm method to either get pregnant or not do not always get what they want because our bodies can sometimes release an egg when it "shouldn't" happen, and sometimes it won't release one when it should.

A baby isn't the only lifelong effect from unprotected sex, but it is the only one that has a good side. Don't be foolish. One good session of sex won't be worth the possible lifelong effects or a disease or a child.

It is said that 10 days from the start of Menstruation is safe. So if you have 5 days menstruation then rest 5 days is safe to have sex without protection. At the same time 6 to 8 days before menstruation is safe time. But it is better to use protection during sex.

This idea was promoted by a certain religious group. It is generally called the rhythm method, only having sex on your ' safe ' days. It is totally unreliable. Seek out a realistic method of birth control or your new name will be mummy!

No time is safe, there is always a chance.

You could have sex (still use a condom) on a day that you are not ovulating to have a better chance at no pregnancy.

search for "ovulation calculator" in search engines like google

Let's say you got your period on the 1st of the month. If you're a regular (28 day cycle) then it's safe to have sex up to day 9 whereas you should use caution on the 10th, 11th, 12th, 13th, 14th and 15th. This happens because your ovulation should begin on the 14th day, but sperm can survive up to 72 hours inside the woman's uterus. Therefore try avoiding sex after day 9 and you can go back to it after the 15th.....

Only during a full moon. Sorry I had to say it but really that's not safe sex, it's called natural birth control.

No time. Always use protection. Preferably a condom if you don't want to be at risk of STDs.
