By getting far away from the abuser and then doing what you think is right and feels best in your eyes such as going to college getting degree, getting a great job and feeling confident in yourself. Buying the car you want, decorating your house the way you want, etc.. Forget the voice of the past and listen to your heart and find out what you want to do.

It all depends on what kind of abuse the individual went through and how it has crippled their life. I personally think that the abused individual needs to do a little soul-searching in the aspect whereas they decide what they want from life, what they want from a partner or a friend, an abused individual also has to learn how to establish that not all people will not treat them the way they used to be treated, etc. As an abused person is crying out about their abuser, they should be writing lists on what they want from these people or how they want to be treated. Instead of moping around about it, they should seek help from themselves and professional help.
To gain self-confidence and self-esteem back, an abused individual must know and remember who they were before they met this person and before their abuser turned them into something he wanted them to be. Remember, what other people saw in you and were proud of - remember of what you were proud of being and who you really are.

The first thing to do is to stop blaming themselves and then re-discover who they they really are.The abuse is extra baggage that can be burdensome so they should try to forget the bad times and create some good times. This may seem impossible at times because of what they have been through, but everyone has the right to happiness and to feel confident in themselves. A little support from friends wouldn't go amiss either.

As one who spent 36 years believing himself worthless, I can answer this with confidence; it comes with love.
