When I'm stuck in traffic, my car tends to heat up to over 95 degrees and then conks out and won't start again.
Its obviously something to do with temperature and that makes me think my fan might not be working properly, but it does make noise, so does anyone have any suggestions as to what else it could be?

By the way, its an Astra and is 13 years old. Old I know, but surely, still reliable...

I'm going to take it into the garage soon, but i want to go to them with some idea what might be causing the problem.

One final request, I'm not great (hence why I'm asking this question in the first place) on cars, so please go easy with me with any technical answers. Thanks.

It is either stalling because the temperature sensor and the Electronic Control Unit is telling it to shut down to avoid ceasing up or worse still it is nearly ceasing-up and cannot tick-over when at that temperature. Check the oil is at the correct level, and the water level in the radiator is correct and that the fan is working. Then warm-up the engine and check the water and confirm if it gets to nearly boiling when the gauge shows 95 degrees. If water is boiling then you have serious trouble and need to get it to a garage quick. If the water is only moderately hot but the gauge is showing 95 then the temperature sensor may be faulty.

It could be your thermostat!
Thats a little gadget that expands with the hot water and opens to let more cold water circulate!
If its not opening your water will boil and your car will stop!
If you fan is working and your getting a temperature reading then it can't be the sensors!
If it was the head gasket it would probably misfire too!
The only other thing it could be is a leaking pipe!

WARNING!!!
Don't ever take your water filler cap off when the engine is hot!
Its a high pressure system and will spray boiling water all over the place!
Leave it for half an hour to cool down!

I had that problem with my little metro as soon I stopped in traffic it would over heat I had to either keep turning the engine off or travel miles round everywhere to make sure I didnt stop in traffic I right pain in the bum! but it was the fan that wasnt kicking in and I think it was the radiator was leaking too, maybe check there is water in yours.

sounds like the temp sender has packed in. but if you haven't had this checked out then best bets are your going to need a new engine because of the amount of damage that could have been caused by the car over heating.

also it could be that the ecu is on its last legs. but you can get these refurbished at any garage, they just send it to vauxhall, and it ain't cheap!

1 check your water levels
2 check to see if you fan is kicking in when ticking over
3 take off your oil cap and check for white spots in the oil ( water ) it could be that your head gasket has gon.
