Zoos kept them predominantly for educational reasons, in particular because of their role in the food chain and their interesting social behaviour. However, the number of zoos keeping this species is relatively low, as zoos tend to focus rather on the African wild dog, which has a similar distribution, plays a similar ecological role and is also organized in packs, but which, differently from the hyena, is Endangered in the wild .

A lot of factors determine what animals a particular zoo can put on exhibit. Does the zoo have space for hyenas? How would the exhibit fit in with the zoo's other exhibits? Are hyenas available to live in that zoo? Does the zoo staff have the experience and capacity to care for hyenas?

Come to the Buffalo Zoo. We have hyenas in a nice exhibit. They even have rocks that are warmed.

Hyenas tend to unnerve the other animals with their behaviour and presence. Keeping them then tends to make maintaining discipline within the zoo a problem.
