I can't imagine it personally, but I will venture and somewhat educated guess. They have dissociated with the baby being a person. They only see it as the cause of some frightening consequences, and fear, if anyone finds out about it they will be in danger.
They have not been educated about the fact that the baby can be dropped off at a hospital without recrimination.
They are young, scared, uneducated(most likely) and also most likely victims of some form of abuse themselves.
They do not see the true horror of what they are doing, because they have denied, to themselves, as I said before, that the baby is a human being.
If a girl can go 9 months without anyone noticing that she is pregnant, there is definitely something wrong in her world.
I am not defending it, I think it is tragic, but we can not judge others if we have not walked in their shoes. I doubt anyone has ever done this with the full understanding of what they were doing. The human mind can do all kinds of tricks to make bad things seem like the right thing to do.
There are currently places in the world where poverty is so bad, that babies are left to starve, and no one blinks an eye. Like someone said, survival, the instinct kicks in and overrides morality.

I think the person just thinks about how to get themselves out of a "bad" situation. They do not think about the alternatives (or know about them) of placing the child into the care of an adoption agency, etc., they just think of the easiest way out, which could be the dumping of a baby into a garbage can.

Desperation, they're trapped and have no way out, why else would someone dump their baby? They likely had it in secret and are way too scared to keep it. This is still a culture where unwed mothers do still get a stigma attached to them.

As for killing children, it seems to be a form of mental disorder. Any time you see mothers that kill their babies or young children they're usually not all there psychologically.

Hopelessness:
I’m no good.
I’ll be a bad parent
My sexual partner is no good.
My sexual partner is a bad parent.
This child will grow up to be worse than I am & worse than my sexual partner
Can’t tell my parents.
Friends aren’t there, I don’t trust my friends
God doesn’t exist.
There is no hope, protect self then restart.

Society often focuses on scandals. This prompts fears which isolates those in need. Isolation creates the hoplessness that causes women to do such unimaginable things.

Public schools show films scaring teen-ager about pregnancy. This includes 'child birth' focused in negative ways. It focuses on hardships a teen mother has. I understand the government doesn't want kids on welfare, but the scare tacktics are really horrible!!!

Mentally there needs to be something wrong with them. No one in their right mind would intentionally hurt another person. I also believe that they are uneducated in the fact that you can bring the baby to the hospital, police station, church or firehouse with no questions asked. They will not get into trouble, they dont even have to give their name. There is no excuse to ever hurt a baby. I also think that if the parents were more aware of what their kids were doing and who they were doing it with, it wouldnt happen so much. I would know if my daughter was pregnant. I talk to her everyday, we have dinner together everynight. I know where she is at all times. Its called parenting.

Their minds and atitudes are ensnared in the throw away culture. They have immersed themselves in the antipathy of our society. They are disconnected and can no longer associate life with the real world.

I think it's fear and irrationality that is running through their entire being when something like that happens. Obviously they cannot be of sound mind at that moment.
