Here's a few examples.
"I had a notebook once." - "I owned a notebook once."
"I had him, but he got away." - "I caught him, but he got away."
"Had you waited a second longer, you would've been late for class." - "If you waited a second longer, you would've been late for class."
There's all kinds of replacements for "had". I just started you off with a few examples.

owned is probably closest.
I had a dog ~ I owned a dog.
Others depending on the contect that might work would be controled, procured, obtained, registered, etc.
