I am running the MS Visual Web developer express editions and learning from their web site. I'd like to be able to make some interactive web sites in the future.

What are the most popular web skills that companies are looking for?

You need to learn XHTML, HTML, XML, CSS, javascript, PHP, ASP, JSP and others. It is also good to have some database knowledge using MySQL, PostGRES, Firebird and others.

You should also read about web standards at the site http://www.w3schools.com/ . Microsoft is a good place to learn but if you think to really develop a web page you should understand about crossbrowing and a few others technologies. The problem to study at a Microsoft tool or site is that it will generate a code that probably only works at IE browser and this code.

Good luck

Flash is a popular web skill to learn. You can make interactive web applications. AJAX is another popular skill, it refreshes only certain web controls without refreshing the entire web page. A good understanding of XML wouldn't hurt either.
