I am originally from Bombay and moved to the USA six years ago. My friends who visit India frequently all say that urban India has changed so much. Not only in terms of economic opportunities, but also socially and culturally.

I would like to get your views and examples on this; from those who have lived in India all the time, as well as those who live abroad but visited recently. Also would appreciate input from a gender perspective, e.g, equal opportunities for women, change in social status etc. Thank you very much.

A person staying in the area won't be able to realize the changes as the changes would be gradually accepted by the person. I make frequent visits to mumbai. I find that the lifestyle is turning out to be more branded, economy improving (in terms of income), socially still the same old mumbai (people are still friendly and warm), more opportunities available, culturally - wo ich culture hai bhidu, khali bole toh thoda sa fashion badh gayela hai, apna ijjat toh sab log waisa ich karta hai jaisa paach saal paeyle karta tha....

All the best...

:-)

01 After intoduction of Panchayat all the developments are though Panchayat. Even the Prachant pradhan is a Woman.
The gender perspetic have been developed but a lot things are yet to be developed. The superstius feeling and cultural are still active in some very remote area and ignorance or eduction is still to be developed in very remore area.
02 Development in Communication
Mobile and telephone has created a history. I cant imagine that I can talked to my relatives sitting in Mumbai or in Bangladesh or in Delhi.
03 Road Services
National Highways have connected almost all urban areas and some PWD road or District road has connected the very very interrior area of Urban area.
03 Education
By inducting midday meal the primary eduction and education for all has been successful and the primary and secondary schools are available and even higher education are available in Urban area.

I am living in india from last 17 years in a nearby town of delhi. The name of this town which now become a metroplitan city of india is Gurgaon. In the last five years gurgaon has taken a drastic move in its social and economic development. After the establishment and coming up of different MNCs and call centres the city has become a new york of india and increasing skyscrappers titled Gurgaon as a Manhattan of India. More and more foreign companies would like to invest more nad more money In Gurgaon. When i was in class 6 nobody has even know that gurgaon is also a one of the city of India but now it ahs attained its position on the world map. In abroad people are aware about Gurgaon. After the comong of great projects like Nh8 expresswaya nd SEZ development gave it a new shape. Previously it was very difficult to believe that there would be an opening of a mall in Gurgaon but know Gurgaon has given the best malls of India to its country people. The major accomplishement which has been seen in the last 3 or 4 years is the arrival of DMRC(Delhi Metro Rail Corporation) in Delhi has made the life of daily commuters more convinient and easy and all these changes has made the life of common man very easy and affordable too.

Urban india has changed for the better with regard to Moble communications. The variety of mobiles used by even poor and polyphonic ringtones, camera phones etc are mindboggling The number of channels one can view nearly 200 and the variety available in FM channels which are on the increase are for the better. The number of cars in variety and style has also increased. But urban young are confident of taking on the world wiithout fear and self confidence.
the Urban Bambay which stood united during the unprecedented downpour and helped each other, also the sheer necessity of the urban poor to get to work after the bomb blasts are study in contrast.
The night life of super rich remains same while the pawing of females by newly moving in urban poor as during gateway of India incident shows the change in Mumbai security for females.
The super rich of India continue to be oblivous to the pitiable conditions of the poor can be seen from the lack of SINGLE HALFWAYHOME OR LONGRANGE HOME FOR THE ABONDONED MENTALLYILL. They coninue to think that supporting poor is having photo opportunity and paying once a while 80(G) contribution. They just donot do any thing with their HAND. A tendulkar will not start anyhting like what mark waugh do or even Imran Khan do for his mother's name.Same is the case with ambanies and their ilk who cannot copy Bill Gates or warren buffet or even our own NavalTata in philonthropy. They are busy entering the Forbes list of 500 and that is all.
The villagers are slowly knowing their voting rights as also the urban poor who showed the pundits wrong during the urban body election for Mumbai.
Feudalism continues to exist in various forms in politics, business and bureacracy.

Yes, there are visible and fast changes with regard to culture, lifestyle, values etc.

But, people in general cannot clearly judge or say whether it is for good or bad.

Whereas, the senior citizens like me who have seen the past and seeing the present cannot accept the changes as we feel that the quality of life has definitely corroded.

yes last five years have witnessed a huge change in the life style , culture, and values of people in urban india. This is due to the increase in quality of education, exposure to defferent civilisations by media and interactions. This change is still continueing. women have experienced better social status and are almost equal to men in many ways.

India is changing for the better.I live here and I have seen India grow and advance in the positive way.Women today undertake all the roles that one time done by mails,eg working at petrol bunks, driving public transport buses, they are CEO's of companies, they work in the banking sector etc.you name it and women are there.
Today the social status is more flexible There are those privet sectors which are doing so well. The foreign investors too are turning to India.Today India is the most talked about destination for job opportunities.People here no longer look for foreign placements.

Hello
I am a Goan from birth, i have lived my state from my birth.
Regarding the changes....yes my dear friend....lots of things have changed that i have noticed from my teens to adulthood....
Some changes have bought prosperity and some changes have killed the humanity.
Indians were the idols of sacrifice and peace...but slowly that has been dying out....
People have no time to know about another...all are so busy in making money...
Our talents have gone and settled in other countries blessing them with prosperity and india is still living in poverty but no one cares? why should i think about all? i just wanna think about me.....thats the state of our country today...
Today poiltics, power rules in India...We have adopted western culture...our lifestyle is changed...
Earlier one woman would get married and stay with her husband...but today women stay with men without commitment....its a style that we have copied from the west...its not our culture...
Our dressing style is become so much vulgar...abusive...
Today India rates to 95% in rapes and murder....
Was the rate high in the last 6 years?
Child abuse is the second highest in our country....
Drugs, and high terrorism on the hot list....
This is what is changed.....
Poor people are poor, defeted and die before they can even live, and rich people keep buliding their riches...with the blood of our own brothers and sisters...
Our pledge is just on the books not in our hearts on in our deeds....
