Actually originally pink was a manly colour, and blue was "girly". It was thought that pink was a shade of red, a war-like colour, colour of blood. At the beginning of XX century women's magazines advised mothers to use blue - a delicate and dainty colour - for girls, and pink - decided and strong colour for boys. It was so till 1960, when pink became associated with female private parts.
Blue is colour of Virgin Mary, so it was considered feminine!
In Japan, the color pink has a masculine association. The annual blooming of the cherry trees, with it's pink blossoms, each spring ( the Sakura ) is said to represent the young Japanese warriors who fell in battle in the prime of life ( the Samurai).
In some of the Slavic languages gay people (men) are called "blue".
On the other hand, in Victorian England white and pink were considered proper colours to wear for young unmarried women; older women who wore pink were considered "mutton dressed as lamb".
Blue is considered to be "the least "gender specific" color, having equal appeal to both men and women" (compare blue jeans!).
Altogether this colour association is a creation of 20 century. There is no definite colour, attributed to a specific gender through the centuries. Blue/pink was picked up to represent babies, and in the cultural shift of post-war years pink was "assigned" to girls, and blue - to boys.

I think Adriennes answer is very interesting. I also believe that it is used as a way in hospitals to differenciate between girl and boy babies.
Although I feel that their's nothing sexier than a guy who can be completely straight and feel comfortable wearing pink. They have tons of really nice men's clothing in that color now. And women have always been wearing shades of blue.
Maybe it has something to do with children but the older you get the less colors stereotype a person. Just a thought...

There are 2 explanations for that:
1. Back in medieval times blue was considered the best color because people thought it scared away demons and protected the baby. That is why blue was given to the boy babies because they were considered more important than the girls. Pink was just a leftover color so that was for girls.
2. People used to say boy babies came from cabbage patches. The blue color came from the inside of the cabbage leaf. Girls came from roses and pink was the inside color of a rose so pink for girls and blue for boys.

As a synesthesic, colorations for me do have an extremely own and personified illustration. pink would not unavoidably characterize anger, yet an severe and compelled individual. comparable to the belief of a individual retaining their breathe, they are in a position to easily do it for thus long. a gloomy blue would recommend obnoxious, sarcastic, rude. White would be a pushover, an extremely insecure guy or woman. ect. As for the universal thought of colorations, each and every does recommend a temper or vibe. green would recommend clam, impartial. Black would recommend cynical and deep. Fuchsia ought to recommend hyper and energetic. pink ought to be comparable to green, inspite of the undeniable fact that it relies upon on the colour of direction. Blue, finding on the colour, ought to frequently recommend distant or chilly, in case you will.

I think that that is very odd as well. I like pink and blue. Pink for certain things and blue for others.

I don't know, but I do know that studies show that men will buy a pink health care product if they think no one is watching because they subconsciencely think pink is cleaner than other colors.
Examples include shampoo, soap and conditioner.
