A dwarf galaxy in Canis Major (referred to as the Canis Major Dwarf) discovered in 2003 replaced the Sagittarius Dwarf as the nearest known galaxy. The CMa Dwarf is 42,000 light years from the center of the Milky Way, and 25,000 light years from Earth.

It's the Sagittarius Dwarf galaxy.
Edit: Dang it...I'll have to give myself a thumbs down and defer to Injanier down below. It is indeed the Canis Major Dwarf.
It boggles me me that people blurt out Andromeda as the answer, that is based on sheer ignorance. Sure, it's the closest *spectacular* galaxy, but there are more than a dozen small galaxies that are closer to us.

The closest galaxy to us is the small Magellanic cloud it is 70,000 light years away.
It was the origin of a super nova in 1987.
Even though it blew up 70,000 years ago it was relatively close to us and we learned a few things about super novas from it.
It was a red giant and astronomers always thought that only blue giants blew up.
This 20 solar mass star was known to astronamers,I think it was called sanduliac or some thing close.
Just thought you might like to know.

The closest galaxy to us is Canis Major Dwarf. It is 42,000 Light years from the center of the Milky Way, and 25,000 Light Years away from the Earth. There are no space probes aimed in that direction.

The closest galaxy is the Sagittarius Dwarf galaxy. It's quite tiny, and it's being torn apart by our own galaxy. It's 88,000 light years from Earth.
The nearest spiral galaxy is M31 (or NGC 224), also known as Andromeda Galaxy. It is 2.9 million light years from our galaxy.

Technically, we have several dwarf galaxies orbiting the Milky Way, which are known as the large and small Magenallenic Clouds. The closest spiral galaxy to us is Andromeda.

Andromeda Galaxy !
More interestingly Andromeda Galaxy is approaching the Sun at about 300 kilometres per second (186 miles/sec.), so it is one of the few blue shifted galaxies.

the nearest galaxy to the milky way is the andromeda galaxy...astronomers calculate the two galaxies will collide at some point in the future, but dont ask me to quote that info...lol
