I'm 17 years old, I have my period about every 2 weeks with bad cramps. I want to go on the pill but I'm worried about weight gain. I'm 5'4 and I weight around 103 lbs... I've been this size for the past 4 yrs and I look healthy and like the size I'm at. I'm so used to having all sorts of clothes accumulated for years of not growing. I know I will grow eventually, But I'm not ready yet. So how much, if any weight do you think I'd gain? I want the pill for more than just my period, I'm also sexually active. But I'm just telling my mom I want it for my period and I heard insurance is cheaper

What about tanning while on the pill?

I didn't gain any weight. The pills really help for your period.
But I wouldn't tan in the tanning bed....it ages you and could give you melanoma.

k if ur 103 pounds that aint healthy for a girl ur size! when I was ur age I was around 125 and everyone said I looked GREAT! Now as for birth control I would go on the shot if u dont want to have your period. I was on it and don't need to worry about taking pills every single day. The shot lasts for 3 months and a week if u are lucky. I've been off the shot tho for almost 2 yrs cause I didnt like some of the effects. Talk to your doctor about what birth control your on and tell him/her how you feel.

u should see a gyno-years ago I had my period for a month & was put on the pill for regulation & it worked -but 4 years later I had a non-cancerous tumor the size of a grapefruit removed-it all was from the irregular periods, but to small to detect then. 10 years ago I had my period every 17 days for 9-10 days. Had cysts & a hysterectomy-It was the BEST surgery I ever had --of course I was 40 & had 2 kids also. Just get checked as there can be small underlying issues that may not show . Talk to ur mom -she may be more understanding than u think. good luck be safe xo Donna P

Yasmin is amazing. I would def recommend it. I used to have HORRID periods where it seemed like I would never stop bleeding but Yasmin cleared up the whole thing and normalized everything so that 4 years later, I have a blissful 2 day period and no worries.

oh and honey, if you are having sex, you should def be on the pill and make him use protection as well, at 17 you do not need a child as well.

but check out Yasmin, it has no weight gain effects (I actually wanted to gain some since I am 5'10 and 115lbs...)

good luck!

I was just like you. I was scared to take the pills because I thought I would gain weight. I heard a lot about the IUD Mireana and that it had a low dosage of hormones, some side affects but which birth control doesn't have any side affects. I had it inserted last year Nov. I haven't really seen any signs of weight gain. I have my normal cycles, sometimes just spotting, and eventually its supposed to go away (depends on your body) . My insurance company paid for the whole procedure. They will probably do the same for you because they prefer to pay less money for a birth control method then having to fork out money for a baby.

I was 17 when I started and I was around the same weight as you. I actually lost weight when I started taking it-Ortho Tri-Cyclen. But... everyone's body types are different. I dont' think you'll know for sure if you'll gain/lose/stay the same until you try it out. If you feel that you're retaining a bit of water, just try and avoid sodium. I always noticed that when I felt heaviest, I was eating pretzels and things with salt--making my body retain water. Best of luck--you'll be fine! And it's better to add only a few pounds instead of the weight of a baby.

Better to be ON the pill and gain a little weight than NOT to be and gain a whole lot of weight in 9 months. Seriously !

Well, weight gain depends on the person. No one gains the same amount as another person. If you want it that bad, go on it. If you don't want to gain weight, work out. But in my opinion, it seems like a couple of punds wouldn't hurt to gain in ur situation. Also, i hope ur using other safe methods while having sex and aren't on the pill.

I personally did not gain more than 2oz on Necon (the generic version of a pill called Modacon).

I did gain about a pound when I started on Ortho-Tri-Cyclen. However, it made my period brown and goopy so I switched, and I am very happy with it.

Your gynocologist can tell you about more options that have little to no weight gain.

Tanning doesnt mess with the pill. And I'm on it and I havent gained any weight. I'm 5'5 110 =p

You probably have a fast metabolism which is all the more reason not to worry. Don't worry, you won't become a fat chick, hahaha

Some people don't gain any weight while on the pill, but if you do, (maybe over 7lbs) see your doctor, the pill you are on might not suit you. Sometimes, like all medicine you might need to change you meds until you and your doctor find the one that suits your body.
