Satanism is more a philosophy than a religion. It's actually non-theistic and elevates the self above anyone else. It's about doing what makes you happy, within the bounds of basic morality (no killing without just cause, but you don't have to love your neighbor or that kind of feel-goodery)

I believe Satanism was just attached to show that it was a break from Christianity. It isn't exactly opposed to Christianity, it just dismisses it. This is LeVayian satanism.

There are other brands of Satanism that actually follows Satan as either an evil force, or as Lucifer suggests: the light bringer. They say that in the Garden of Eden Satan tempted man to eat from the Tree of Knowledge, so Satan was enlightening man.

Satanism by definition is a religion created by Anton LaVey, that practices self indulgence and used Satan as a symbol and a force of nature, not an evil entity with horns and a pitch fork. I am a Catholic and feel that most of the time people who say they Satanist may not understand the religion. Sometimes there are those few different teenagers out there who do something cruel to an animal and say it is part of their Satanic worship. I feel that religion must be followed daily and you must live the way you preach. Also, Satanist believe they are their own redeemer, which I do not feel is true because if you think you're good then you are, but to other people you may not be good so having a Creator to decide upon your redemption is like have a third party to assess the situation, which is a good idea.
