Not if the wife is working.
Staying at home with the kids REALLY IS like having two full-time jobs.
The first is keeping up with the house...laundry, dishes, meal preparation, other various cleaning tasks, etc.
The second is keeping up with the kids...feedings, bathing, schoolwork, playing, discipline...with kids, there is no "et cetera"...the list is neverending.
And all this work with NO PAY other than pride in your work and appreciation from those you do it for.
Now, if this "stay at home dad" is sitting on the couch, watching tv with his hand down his pants while the kids run wild and tear up the joint, then I would say that in THAT case, being a stay at home dad IS a euphemism for being unemployed.

Don't ever let anyone tell you being a stay-at-home parent isn't a job, its the hardest one that I've ever had. It pays in love & smiles(unfortunatly smiles never paid the bills!) As far as unemployment goes you've gotta file off the most recent job you had that meets the quota for 6+ monthes of employment.
Good luck & God Bless
P.S. come on down to "Souls R US" for a refurb.
It only will cost you an arm & a leg!!!!!

"Stay at Home" dad usually referes to the domestic situation where the wife goes out and works and brings home the paycheck while the "dad" stays home and takes care of the house and kids.
So, instead of the title "Domestic Goddess" that his wife might have used, he would be the "Domestic God" instead.
Some might label this arrangement a bit emasculating since it's been typically the job of the man to go out and bring home the bacon.
A stay at home dad would not be able to collect unemployment unless he had previously worked for a company and then was laid off, in which case he would be eligible for unemployment insurance.

i think that's a bit of a generalization...my father was a 'stay-at-home' dad who was available to pick up my sister and i after school and take care of us and he worked at night as a firefighter...i believe that his choice to play an active role in our childhood was honorable and i believe that most children aren't able to develop very close relationships with their fathers if their families conform to the more traditional standard of the wife staying at home & the father works as the sole provider.
