I just posted basically the same thing but here are more details...My boyfriend is turning 19 and he wants to amp up his wardrobe. Right now he's very teenager ish with jeans and Salvation Army looking t-shirts (you know with the names of teams and schools that aren't even located in our state). I know what kind of shoes and jeans to get him, that's the easy part. I've already bought him the most amazing cologne for Christmas. For his birthday, we're going shopping and he keeps saying he wants to look "bada*s" which means to me, he's not into button up collar shirts or preppy stuff. We've been through ae and the pants are good, but all they have are polos (he may be into those, we'll try) and button up plaid or striped shirts. He is not into that and I'm not into changing him. He has his own style, we're just not sure what that is. He's pretty skinny and tall. Like his pants should be a 29 inch waist and 32 inch inseam. Graphic tees are good, what else for top?

it really depends on your budget. if you're willing to shell out some cash, try barney's co-op if you live in/near ny, or fred segal in la. (they both also have websites if you aren't close) they carry all the basic designer jeans, plus brands like marc by marc jacobs and evisu, as well as some more cultish labels. they also have great coats and very helpful staffs. if you're not really up to spending a thou plus, urban outfitters is a good (and much cheaper) alternative. for basics, bring him to american apparel- they have great tees that are labor friendly, and have a great hipster-ish vibe that he might be receptive to. as for his build, you're lucky, because pretty much anything will look alright on him. if he wants to add bulk, try layering, but i think a well-tailored blazer would actually look pretty rockin. to brighten things up, go with some quirky accessories. i hate skateboarding, but i love skateboarding caps - they add that extra oomph to a lot of outfits. that may not be his thing necessarily, but find graphic hats, belts, funky sneakers and wallets will help him tie his look together. just because he's upping his wardrobe doesn't mean he has to lose any edge.

i just have a little personal advice: please please please don't take him to ae or holllister or some basic mall store and turn him into a clone. (and i'm sorry, but there really is no difference between any of those places) try flipping through mags or looking online together, not just at online shops, but also webzines and blogs. also, tell him to keep his eyes open and tell you when he sees something he likes, even if it's something ridiculously expensive or he doesn't necessarily see it on himself - you'll get a better idea of where his tastes lie. i have a few of my favorites listed below as a jumping-off point, and check the womenswear too! just look around and i'm sure you'll be finding places of your own in no time.
