With the help of the U.S. the Allies WON the War.

The outcome of World War I created a decisive break with the old world order that had emerged after the Napoleonic Wars. The outcomes of World War I, and especially the Treaty of Versailles which determined the punishment that Germany should face, would be important factors in the development of World War II 21 years later.

One thing that is overlooked:
The US provided troops that werent tired of fighting. Prior to US involvement little changed because the troops rarely bothered to fight one another by the late war. US troops were new, and not fully aware of what was going on. They would charge an enemy foxhole and actually take it and keep it, primarily because no one expected it to be tried with anything approaching real passion at that point.
Think of the US troops as the big stupid guy that is sent in to absorb the attacks on a super hero team.
For the armistice, the US tried to make things fair and even, but was overridden allowing for the extreme punishments to Germany.

"The blunt fact is that when [under Wilson] America was introduced to the War State in 1917, it was introduced also to what would later be known as the total, or totalitarian, state," -- Robert Nisbet.

Some people were revolted by nationalism and what it had supposedly caused and began to work toward a more internationalist world, supporting organizations such as the League of Nations. Pacifism became increasingly popular.
