Well Google is extremely rich and a lot of that comes from PPC and AdSense. Combine this with the need to get to to the top of the search engines and competition is extreme so people are willing to pay.
So millions and millions.

Much of the success of Google Adwords is due to how easy Google makes the bidding and selection of key phrases for it's customers. I'm in the group of thought that a Google Adwords Professional is a nice title to have, but not a requirement for getting results. Many of the GAPs are relatively new to the art as well. Anyone with the time and patience to work with Adwords can run a basic campaign in my opinion.

Hi there,
In order to become an Google Adword Professional you need to set up an account, manage an account with at least $1000 spend over 90 days and take a Google Adwords Exam. So really it is not that hard to do. Just because someone is a professiona is not the best reason to let them manage your campaign look for testimonials and creditibility to determine if they are the best fit.
Hope that helps,

Google itself doesn't publish a list of all the GAPs out there. However, an independent directory does list nearly 1,000 of them. You'll find it here: http://www.whoisagap.com/
