A Long Way Gone - by Ishmael Beah. It's a really interesting story about a child soldier in Sierra Leone.

I like books by Guy Gavriel Kay because he uses our history as a background to his world. Try the Lions of Alrassand. The book is set in a fictional world, but you won't have to try hard to see how it parallels the history of the Iberian Peninsula. Plus...GREAT STORY.

If you like history try 1984 by George Orwell, it was written in 1946 and has risen quite the stir about alot of politics and other things that we use and do today.

Sir Nigel is a historical novel by Sir Arthur Conan Doyle.
Then Sabatini is a very good read:

Scaramouche (1921), a tale of the French Revolution in which a fugitive hides out in a commedia dell'arte troupe;
Captain Blood (1922), in which the title character is admiral of a fleet of pirate ships - I like this one a lot;
Bellarion the Fortunate (1926), about a cunning young man who finds himself immersed in the politics of fifteenth-century Italy.

I had to read a book in college called Higher Circles.

It is regarding poverty and how people try to get out of the way to live for a better one.

Lots of stuff in it. give it a try

Well, what grade are you in?? I did a book report on Anne Frank, you can read "The Diary of Anne Frank" then watch the movie, I think you will like it.

Candide by Voltaire. It's witty and educational and gives an insight into eighteenth century values.
