We just moved recently and house has a rabbit cage already made. I live in Mississippi so the weather would be fine for it to be outside. What type of supplies do I need so it will have adequate shelter and food? Also what do rabbits eat? Thanks for the help in advance.

Find a local feed store like for livestock. They carry good feeds.Purina is a great feed. They also have higher kinds for like show rabbits that is good for coats and digestive tracts. You can give them hay to nibble on as a snack too.Dont give them lettuce or anything like that.It gives them the runs and Ive seen it make them sick to death.A small piece if carrot is ok but only once in awhile.I showed rabbits for years and just make sure they stay out of the rain and sun.Winter time get them a box to make a bed to keep warm.Use staw for bedding.Other stuff can be harmful like the beddings you get at a pet store. Its bad for them cuz they breath it in and its like smoking for us.Just bad.If you have a cage that has a drop pan in the bottom then put some powdered lime for the smell. They should have that at feed stores also. They like to lick on little salt or mineral blocks.Make sure you keep cage clean.Watch for ear mites.Your feed store carries that too.Ear mite lotion.Make sure its safe for rabbits.During the hot times of the year I like to take a 2 liter plastic bottle, fill it 3/4 of the way full with water and freeze it.In the morning or when it starts to get hot in the day,put it in the cage. This helps them keep cool. They like to lick it and lay by it.Rabbits can over heat fast. You can trim their claws like a dog.BE CAREFUL!They have they little veins in the claws like dogs do.Dont cut too short just trim. This is something you may not know but did you know that rabbits can be litter box trainer so they can stay inside.NO JOKE!Pretty neat huh?Good luck with you bunny.Oh do not get a Angora rabbit.Messy and need to be groomed daily.

Mississippi is actually pretty hot for a rabbit to be outside. They are at risk for heatstroak when it gets above 85.
Why not bring it inside, rabbits are highly social animals, and when spayed or neutered, they do not smell.
Bun will need a litter box with litter(never cat litter, use something like yesterdays news) and lots of timothy hay, as much as they will eat. Also a high quality rabbit pellets, never the stuff with the corn and seeds and crap in it. It should just contain pellets.
Go online and find a list of bunny safe veggies, print it out and hang it on your fridge. Don't just assume all veggies are safe for bun to eat, many aren't.
You will need a water bowel, as the bottles become clogged, and it bunny can't drink, bunny will not eat, and that can kill a rabbit very quickly.
Rabbits become destructive when bored, so it will need plenty of things to toss around and chew on, and things to jump onto and off of, and run through, hide in, etc. Does the cage have room for all this? It should be AT LEAST 4x4 and a couple of feet high. Rabbits get painful arthritis when kept in too small hutches. And hock sores from wire-mesh cage bottoms.
Seriously consider bringing your bunny inside. You can but a dag excercise pen for a cage, that has plenty of room! If you adopt a bunny, it will come already spayed or neutered, and litterbox trained.

I own 3 rabbits, all indoor and as long as they are given the attention any other pet would get, they are GREAT companions! Pellets are good for maintenance food, but a variety of greens, veggies, timothy hay and fresh water are the perfect diet. Rabbits have TONS of personality and love attention! I let mine out one at a time (so as to not have MORE than 3 bunnies lol) and they all hop around the house and follow me from room to room. They all answer to their own names as well!!

Congratulations on your possible new rabbit.

Before getting a rabbit, though, please be aware that a rabbit is considered an "exotic" pet and if sick, you will need to find a "special" Veterinarian for your pet, one who is trained in the care and medical procedures for rabbits. The cost for one (1) visit to such a Vet can cost upwards of $500 for services rendered.

Please weigh all possibilities before proceeding.

If after all considerations you decide on getting a rabbit - please again, accept my CONGRATULATIONS.

Have a lovely rest of the day.

rabbits make good pets as long as they live outside in a hutch. In the house they stink horribly. I had a house rabbit and never will again! But yea ouside they are great. Make sure the hutch is secure so other animals can't break into it and kill your rabbit. raccoons, cats, dogs, birds of prey will all try to get your bunny! You don't want them walking on a bare floor so get some bedding for them. Feed them pellets and sometimes carrots or other veggies. get them a water bottle that hangs down and make sure to get them fresh water every day.

well we have 9 rabbits and they live outside in a little building in their little cages. Supplies: Rabbit water bottles, make sure that they have Plenty of Fresh water, A Feeding tray, and we feed our rabbits alfalfa pellets, but you can also give rabbits fresh greens and organic oats. you don't want to give them to much oats though or it will hurt them.
