I went to Salem last year for a day. I found it to be entertaining, although oddly enough my favorite attraction (the polish deli in the mall) had nothing really to do with the city. The city square and waterfront areas are worth a look, not to mention the various museums. I wouldn;t spend much more than a day or so there, however. My wife and I are relocating to the Boston area and were considering moving to Salem. After visiting, we just couldn't deal with the fact that we would be living in a place where it feels and looks like halloween every single day.

I've visited Salem for a few hours. Its not that great during the "off" season.
I would strongly recommend that you visit Salem during October since Halloween is a major event.
There's a few things to see but it is more of a 1/2 day trip.

Salem is overrated actually. The witchcraft stuff is SO touristy it's over the top. (And the ironic part is that a lot of the witchcraft trials happened in Danvers, the next town over). And the downtown area has tons of tourist stores selling all kinds of crap.
However, there are some things worth seeing there. The Peabody-Essex museum is excellent, and there are a couple of old sea captain's houses down near the old port area that are interesting. Also, Salem is getting quite a restaurant scene that is improving.

Salem is home to the oldest candy shop in America: Ye Olde Pepper Companie

House of the seven gables is pretty sweet too:

I love houses with secret passages.

Well, it is interesting if you enjoy history. Also architecture, as there are protected historic districts.
