Most of the dutch know english, at least more than 50%. Much less so speak french. Everybdy learns english in high school, learning french is a choice. I would say less than 10%.

I'd say that 60% has a decent knowledge of English. Most young people speak English quite well. As for French, I think about 20% speaks a bit of French. Learning French is not a choice, it is obligatory. In Holland, there are different levels in high school. The lowest level is VMBO, most students (except for the lowest level) have to do French for at least 2 years. In the second level, HAVO, students have to take 3 years of French and in the highest level, VWO, French is also obligatory for three years. On HAVO and VWO, after these 3 years, students in the language-stream have to do either German or French for another 2 (HAVO) or 3 (VWO) years. However, the knowledge of French they have after even six years is rather passive.

I agree with Martin 50% is definitely on the low side.
I would say between 65% and 75% is more accurate, as all the young people speak English.
French yes, I guess max. 15-20%.

hey! i think that in holland you wont have anyproblem talking english but u may have problem talking french cause more than 70% knows how to speak english and that 30% dont knows cause they are less than 10 years old:D

more than 80% has a basic level ore higher. Its obligated to major in at higschool together with dutch.
