Yes, oral contraceptives can cause worsening or new-onset restless legs syndrome (RLS). Hormone changes can influence RLS, as often happens when pregnant women with hormone changes tend to develop worsening symptoms.

In your case, rather than adding another medication to treat RLS, you and your doctor could consider two possibilities:

1) just keep taking Yaz -- RLS symptoms often go away over time; a folic acid supplement might be helpful because birth control pills often deplete folic acid and that can worsen RLS

2) consider stopping Yaz if the side effects outweigh the benefits -- the symptoms will most likely go away over several days to weeks

Please discuss these options with your doctor first.

RLS is nothing new. Even back in the mid 1940s, Swedish neurologist Dr. Karl Ekbom described its clinical features. Neurologists and other doctors often do prescribe medication for RLS, and even the Federal Drug Administration (FDA) here in the United States approved Requip (ropinirole) for prescribed use almost 10 years ago in September 1997. Thousands of patients have been successfully treated this way.

It is thought that other medications that work like dopamine, such as Mirapex (pramipexole), might also be effective because the drugs are all very similar, but it would cost a lot of money to repeat all the same studies that were performed to get the initial FDA approval for Requip.

RLS? I would question any doctor who prescribe meds for this. When reported on the morning national news that if you ask your local doctor about this ,most would say that this is a drugs company selling a product. I am not saying that you don't have something going on in your legs. I am just saying that as of a year or two ago RLS wasn't even on the charts. I could be wrong, that is why I would ask your doctor. Remember what ever you take, your new baby takes with you. Check it out.

yes, that's a normal side effect of yaz. You can talk to your doctor about RLS. He will prescribe you Requip.

if you have problems with a certain brand of birth control pill, you should have your prescription changed. i had to change mine about three times because they were causing me horrible headaches. but what i would recomend is talking to your doctor.
