I read it and thought it was a little heavy going but well worth the effort in the end.

Yes, I found it excellent, not hard going at all, but then again I'm Irish, you know, land of saints and scholars and all that.

i read it too, and thought it was great, maybe some people can't finish it because it goes off in a bit of a tangent (if I remember correctly), that could have lost some people.

It was also difficult to empathise with some of the main characters

Where is this list of books Britons can't finish (not that I'm British) but I'm struggling through On Beauty by Z Smith at the min, it would be interesting to see if that's on the list too.

It's because much of the book is written in the US drawl of the place that it's set. Essentially, it's a book written in an accent, and I found it takes a while to get used to that.

I think most people don't persevere that long to be honest. They want to be able to get into the book straight away. I found that although Vernon God Little took a while to get going, in the end I couldn't put it down.

I really enjoyed it. I can't understand why it would be on the list. Some of the themes, like the media one how it portrays people is pretty universal!!

"The air was stale, like the air i the crack of your *** when you're sitting."

That was a quote from the book and I would say one of the best metaphors or all time.
