My hubby and I are expecting our first baby. We got a black lab puppy 5 months ago. Around that time I got pregnant. Now, baby's doing a lot of kicking and I casually mention things about the baby. The last 4 times I mentioned something about the baby, he mentioned something about the dog. I called his attention to it over the weekend and he didn't realize he was doing it. It's no big deal, I just thought it was kinda funny. I'm thinking that it's easier for him to talk about the dog compared to the baby (even though he's felt the baby kick), I think baby is more real to me than him yet. What do you think?

my husband is the same way .. we have a 2 year old mini schnauzer (it's his dog .. he had it before we got married) .. whenever I talk about the baby .. he'll ignore me and pick up the dog and start cuddling him.
Before when I told him I'm excited about the baby and am looking forward to teaching him to walk (I'm currently 23 weeks pregnant :)
and he said, "I taught Otis to walk" (that's our dog) .. he always compares the two.
He went as far as saying, OTIS IS GETTING A LITTLE BROTHER!
goodness, I sure do hope it changes when the baby is born! lol.
But I'm sure it's just because the baby isn't here yet .. and I talk about the baby 24/7. I love this baby so much .. everytime I feel him kick I get soo excited I want to tell the world :)
I'm sure he'll come around when he can actually hold his son :)

good luck! God bless!

I personally think that having a puppy is alot more fun than having a baby. Since the baby isn't hear yet, he is probably not able to focus on him/her yet so he is still occupied with the dog. Being pregnant can make you think all kinds of weird things but I would not let it bother you too much. Once the baby is here, he will be all over you and the baby. He will love you even more once he sees what your about to give him. Good luck.

Men don't get to expreince what we do. So they don't get to really bond with the baby until he/she born. Ye the puppy is right in fornt of him and he can see and bond with the puppy now.
I know its not what you ask but I have to say RIGHT NOW is a great time to do your research and learn how to make sure that both the puppy and the baby will be good together. Not that they should EVER be alone together!! Maybe getting the dog into some training classes now will help hubby as well as it will be something he is doing for both the pup and the BABY!

You are absolutely right.

Our first baby is now 13 months old, and we still treat some situations like when we had a kitten. Sounds silly, but if you have more years experience with animals than you do with infants, well, those statements just happen!

Believe me you will feel guilty when that puppy takes a back seat in importance to the baby when he/she is born. What is happening right now is normal.

I would agree. Its harder for the man in the relationship to really get involved until it gets closer to the time that the baby will be born or when you really start to show more. Im now 33 weeks pregnant and my husband just started finally getting excited about....4 or 5 weeks ago about the baby. That was when he first saw my belly move without having to feel my stomach. Its real to him now that when i have braxton hicks and such that...the baby will be here very soon. Its hard for him to be in the reality of it until it becomes more real to him. We as women can come to the realization much sooner because the baby is in us. Its growing inside of us and we feel every nudge and kick and roll...although the man just gets to experience bits and peices of it! Don't worry...once you get farther along and the due date gets closer and closer...he will get more excited and more into it! Just be patient and enjoy your baby growing inside of you! Good luck with everything and congrats on your little one! :)

I agree. Babies are very real to the mothers, we feel the kicks, we get the heartburn. With both of my pregnancies my husband was very uninterested( of course he wanted the babies - he just wasn't really into it) until they were born and were about 6-8 months old.

I definately feel your concern. I cannot tell you how many "discussions" I've had now with mine about how he doesn't seem to realize this is happening as much as I do. I'm beginning to realize though, that he does. Our men feel a little left out of what's going on. They know they're a part of it but they don't feel like it because they cannot yet feel the reality of the situation. He is probably bringing that up because it's the best way he can relate to you about what he cannot know about. Don't get annoyed with him.... you gotta be patient with him just like he's gotta be with you. Good luck and congrats!

Congrats on your pregnancy!!!!

Hubby is scared! lol he is using the puppy to kind of practice for the upcoming baby... though there is NO PRACTICE like the real thing. lol

I did'nt think he knows he is doing it. I guess for him it is just getting him ready. Having a dog, a puppy at that , is a big responsibility!!!

The puppy is present, the baby isn't yet. It's normal. Good luck to the 4 of you

Because the Puppy is there maybe it makes it easier for your husband to relate to it. Your baby is (there) just not out yet. Give him time.....it will hit him soon enough.
