have mummy stay with you and don't look... when you don't look then you'll be in the dark as to when you are going to get stuck with the needle.... when you feel like it is hurting... don't think of needles... think of being on a beach or in a garden with flowers... something pleasant... that's what i do... and to this day i still have scared of the needles... my veins are too,... because they always flop when they're trying to find them...

if it helps... when they do it, you can hold you mummy's hand and squeeze it real tight when it does hurt.... try to squeeze her hand as hard as you can... and before you know it, it will be all over and you can go!

just be happy that you don't plan on becoming a doctor... and that there are people who do becomes doctors... to do that type of thing. Doctors are not there to hurt you, they want to help you and if there is something wrong, the blood test will tell that. If there is nothing wrong... then at least you know that you are healthy until the next time they have to do it again. a prick buys peace of mind.

I dont think they would mind mommy going with you.

I used to be afraid as well, to the point of shutting myself in a room when my parents brought Hepatitis vaccine home for administration ( My sis is a medico, so she said she would administer it at home itself).

But recently I caught jaundice, and HAD TO get not one, but several blood tests. And actually, it doesn't hurt that much at all. Its like someone pinched you on the hand . Don't hyperventilate over such a trivial matter. IT used to be painful, WHEN they used thick needles with Glass syringes. Now, with the aids threat the thinner needles are used only once.

When I think , how much I worried over this thing, I grimace. Anticipating it was worse than the act itself. I am not saying you wouldn't feel it at all, but it won't bethat painful as you think

MOST IMPORTANT:

Resolutely look in any other direction except the needle or the hand, if you want to avoid freaking out. look at some painting on the wall. Or just any random spot!
I repeat, do notlook at the syringe, or at the needle while they are collecting the sample.

Awww, yeah, your mom can stay with you and hold your other hand. They just wrap a bit of rubber around your arm, ask you to make a fist and then poke you with a needle. It hurts for maybe half a second, and then it's all okay. Try looking the other way so you don't know when the needle is coming. It makes it easier somehow. And if you don't like blood, don't look until the nurse or your mom says it's okay.

Just remember not to jump or flinch, because that can make it hurt more since it can make the needle dig in.

Good luck!

omg im 22 and i still have tears during blood tests. no they dont hurt at all,and yes ur mom can stay with you. the only reason i get tears is just the thought of the needle going through, but you know what? just think positive. having a blood test will let doctors diagnose any problems you may have and help keep you healthy!

You will feel it stick but it is not too bad. I have donated a lot of blood and hate needles.(go figure!) I find that not looking while the needle goes in helps alot. Your mom should be able to stay with you while blood is drawn for your blood test.

Hi Sophie,
Blood tests are no more painful that a shot from your doctor.
Yes, your Mum can be with you while it's being done.
Don't be afraid--it's an everyday proceedure, so the nurses
are very good at drawing blood. They'll just "poke" your arm
and draw out a small tube of blood. Then they tape a piece of
cotton on the poke hole, and you're all done.

Yes, your mum can stay with you. The prick of the needle is just like a slight scratch. It takes about 10 seconds to draw the blood, you can look away. Honestly, it's nothing to worry about at all

Hurts for a moment, like a quick hard pinch. Your mother better be allowed to stay with you. If I (a dad) was told to leave, we would be going to a different doctor. When they are ready to start, look away from your arm and talk to someone (mom, nurse, etc.) about anything. Tell nurse not to count down (3,2,1 now) - just get it over with. I still do this and i'm over 40. You'll be OK. Hang tough

Your Mum should be able to stay with you. Blood test wil hurt but not that much, just look away when the nurse (not the dr, nurses are better at taking blood) takes the blood and you will be fine.

I don't know if the doctors would let your mom enter with you, but I think there should be no problem if you ask nicely.

I don't like needles too, but what has helped me is to relax my body. I know that the instictive stuff to do is to tighten your muscles, but if you can relax your arm it will go easier, really trust me on this. Talk with the doctor that will draw blood to let you tell him/her when you're ready. Relax and say go.

Good luck!
