I looked at homedepot.com and could not see any difference between a free standing and a slide in range. As long as the opening is wide enough and deep enough you would not have any problems.

I've had both, but I prefer the slide-in. Besides the seamless look the most important point for me is ease of cleaning. With a freestanding there are usually small spaces on the sides and/or in the back. No matter how small the gaps, dirt and food splashes inevitably get trapped and are difficult to reach when tidying up.
So go ahead and choose whatever suits your taste and budget. Both will look and work great in your kitchen.

the difference is the back splash part of the unit. slide ins are made to be low profile for access to the counter top. freestanding have a back splash that goes against the wall to prevent some of the spatter from getting directly on the Wall surface and in many cases the controls are there also.

Ouch, The differences these people have forgotten to tell you, If you buy it from HD or Lowes, When they bring it in your home, and see that the free standing range Doesn't "Just slide in" They won't install it unless you pay extra for the following things to be done, The shoe Molding that is at the base of your slide in range is now has to be cut out, If your old wiring is a 3 wire application, it needs to be changed to a 4 wire application, and at the least your old slide in range is Hardwired and the new one will Plug in, which means you will have to have a range outlet installed, regardless if it's 3 or 4 wire.....Hope this helps.

Slide in is made to work with the setup, freestanding assumes there is no countertop, etc. in the way. Don't screw with it. You could be painfully, expensively sorry.

Okay Sarah, your intention to get a free standing one is just perfect. Don't worry, the supplier should take care of the space and other problems if any while installing the new one!
