Ethical hacking most likely is something determined by the person that is interpreting it. However, from what i understand, it has 2 meanings.

1) Ethical hacking is when a company hires a "hacker" (security expert) to find holes in the companies network security. They do this because it is better to have someone to find all exploits that works for you instead of it actually happening from a real "hacker".

2) It is also a loosely used term for people that have legitimate monitoring needs.

in your case, it seems like the second option would be more appealing as you are trying to read objectionable emails that a child may receive. This is something that can be accomplished a few ways.

One would be to talk to the child and discuss it with them. There is no harm in asking about .

Another way (this would apply if you think the child would not tell you) is to install monitoring software on the computer. If is not ethical hacking to read private emails. If you give your children email, you should be able to trust them with it since you let them have it in the first place. Also, if you kids are over 12 years of age, they will be able to thwart whatever you do.
