Usually the car stops running. You can crank it, but it doesn't start.

Actually, all three posters were correct.
Eventually the car will turnover but not start. BUT, the symptoms of a dying disty would be what the second poster said. The engine will jump around and misfire.... Your rpms may shoot up and fall when driving, it will run very rough, but eventually, your car will not start.

Your car will not run or run smoothly because of inconsistent electrical connections or moisture enters the distributor housing and interferes with firing.

The fire is no longer distributed to the individual plug wires. The engine will not run. Could backfire while trying to start it.

When it breaks, you stop running. You won't get the spark to the plugs to fire the engine.
