Sadly that's unlikely to happen, For some people being materialistic, owning the latest car / suits / breed of dog is the only thing in their lives they can see as able to make them happy. They are deaf to all talk to the contrary.
Maybe if you made being poor and content the next wow thing in fashion?

Well it depends on what people you are referring to! If it is people you know, than you can talk with them and let them know how you feel. If it is your children or family, then take things that are not needs! Don't allow things that are not a necessity! If you are talking about just people in general than that is a whole other world. I am divorced from my children's father and him and his new wife are very, very materialistic! My kids, when they visit, aren't allowed to even walk into the living room. This room is for show! They can not sit, walk into or threw this room! They would rather use the kitchen and there are strict rules in place for those rooms! I struggle with teaching my kids that materialistic things are not that important and to just breathe and take in the many wonderful things in life. I also teach my kids that they should be greatful for the little things, like food, clothing, water!, and transportation, education, and freedom! I teach them that these are things that other people in our world don't have.
I look at it like this.........No matter what you have on this earth, you can not take it with you when your time comes! The most important thing in life is living life! Basically, you can replace material things but you can't replace a life!

Start taking away the crap they hold on to more than what they should be holding on to, family, society, etc.
Think about American Beauty, when the couch gets stained, so what, you can get another couch, can you get another relationship?

i'm not that materialistic. as long as i have music, i'm alright. i design and sometimes make my own shirts.
