Whatever you do, don't buy a Compaq. Mine was a couple years old, but barely used when it quit booting up. I looked online and their were literally hundreds of complaints about the same thing happening--a factory defect that they refused to acknowledge or fix. If you can afford to, buy a Mac. They may seem a bit more expensive, but they will last virtually forever if you take care of them. You can also run windows programs on them now, some even faster than on an ibm compatible.

No one can answer this as it depends on your budget and useage needs

BUT

Go for a reputable manufacturer, Toshiba for example, rather than a 2nd line retailer who uses other peoples components (and avoid ADVENT like the plague).

Then look at your needs, no point in paying for expensive graphics cards if you aren't going to be playing high end games, or sound cards if you aren't going to be using it for music/film.

I have a Sony Vaio and I love it. It's not that cheap, but it has excellent security features, a nice sized screen, a multifunction dock for my DVI-D, DVD+R, DVD+/- RW, 4 USB ports which is excellent,

It's just a cool laptop. It's around a little over two grand with the multifunction dock installed.

I can only give my experience with laptops. I have had 3 Toshibas and one non Toshiba. I got rid of the Toshibas due to old age! The non Toshiba got rid of my data and died.

After deciding what kind of compatibility you need; IBM, Mac, etc., (or maybe a co-processor so you can run it all), I'd go to CONSUMER REPORTS online. Then I'd go to e-bay, company websites, etc., and see if I could find a good deal.
