It's not really that way. I know a lot of women who are not particularly pretty (some of them are outright ugly) yet achieve a lot at work and live in very happy relationships.
The idea that 'all women need to be pretty to be worth anything' is a misconception, unfortunately furthered by the media. There are many not all that good looking or outright ugly men in the media, but it is hard to see any woman on TV who is not pretty. In fact, in most movies the casting picks only women of a certain type (like small noses, thick lips) and neglect any form of female beauty outside the clichee.
Guess the trouble is, we tend to take the movies and TV too much for the real thing, and then we start wondering.

I know I'm going to get into trouble by answering this but... at the heart of all women lies the desire to be known for beauty in some way, to either express it or to be beautiful. Little girls dress up and show off and ask "am I lovely?" And all women feel insecure about some area regarding their beauty, even super-models. More women are interior designers and women are more into fashion and they wear makeup. More women center their lives around making the world a more beautiful place. Men live their lives for achievement. Women live their lives for relationships. And beauty attracts people.
It's part of the curse of original sin. Eve felt that there was something wrong with her that Adam didn't protect her from the serpent, so all women feel a deep desire to be wanted, protected and worthy.
So, it is important to make all women feel beautiful and worthy in some way. Whether it's on the outside, or inside, or that she makes or does something beautiful.
Beauty is at the heart of femininity.

SmartAlex is onto something with his statement "So, it is important to make all women feel beautiful and worthy in some way. Whether it's on the outside, or inside, or that she makes or does something beautiful."
I don't agree with him on the whole, but women do need to feel WORTHY (as all humans do), and in our society, beauty is given a high degree of worth. Therfore, many women seek to maximize their beauty in the hope that it increases their worth. Just my observation.
Attractiveness bias happens to men, too.
Our society is has some messed up priorities.

That is an excellent question and one that has plagued tis country for quite a while now. I agree that there are many other great things that women should be recognized for other than looks. However, thanks to our wonderful media and the way that "perfect women" are portrayed (skinny, large breasts, etc), our children are taught that this is what they need to do to succeed in life. It's sad.

Have you ever seen an ugly successfull woman ? If women achieve it is really an handout by some man. The reason you see so few women who are successfull on their own is because the way to success is pawed with risk and faillure, the ability to cope with risk and failure is linked to testosterone. Women are less likely to take risk and therefore less likely to get anywhere, unless they recieve an handout. Thats why we need quotas to get women into the workforce, because else at the first sign of troubel they would get a man and be done with it.

The desire to be pretty could never take over my dreams and ambitions for life. Thats just superficial stuff and has no real meaning in life. Beauty can't bring you happiness.

It is sad, but I really think in highly competitive fields your looks will not count. Even in Hollywood the good-lookers are shot down when they are found out they have no talent.
