Ok, me and my family have been to Florida 5 times now (we're Brits... enough said ^^). Last year, we used a different flight path and for some reason, we were dropping about a thousand feet at a time on the descent instead of a gradual descent. Is this to do with security? Also, the descent really screwed up my balance... I kept getting dizzy spells and the feeling of when we were falling for weeks after XD

I fly often in and out of Orlando International and don't recall this happening to me on my trips. I think it may have been due to runway availability or changes in flight pattern that the pilot had to deal with. I am sorry that it happened to you but am sure you still have a great time!

When you land from the North you do make a gradual descent, starting well North of Orlando. I enjoy that part of the trip as I've lived in Orlando for 60 years and enjoy picking out landmarks I know.

Landing from the South, you now pass over homes of PGA golfers such as: Tiger Woods, Ernie Ells, Nick Price the list goes on. The sharp descent is so the planes don't disrupt these wealthy golfers lives. Although jets make much less noise now, on landing, just the sight of a plane in "their" airspace is disrupting.

The only place in the US where I know the approach route has changed post 9/11 in into Washington Ronald Reagan (formerly National) airport, where the planes now have to stay over the river.

Maybe your pilot was one of the creators of the ever-growing roller-coasters and the Tower of Terror. You're lucky he didn't charge for extra amusement.
