It is a springtime holiday, associated with the new birth that comes in the spring. There are some pagan connotations as well, but mainly I think it has to do with the season of the year.

From the pagan holiday Ostara. The bunnies and eggs are a representation of fertility. When the Saxons and German pagans were converted to Christianity, they brought these traditions with them. Many traditions incorporated into christian holidays are based on pagan holidays. The bringing in of the balsam or fir tree is a pagan tradition, along with the yule log, and the five point star (IE the Christmas tree). The carving of pumpkins is directly from the pagan holiday celebration of the fall harvest. Most Christian holiday traditions are based on "old religion" traditions because Christianity is the youngest/newest religion. Hope this answers your question.
