In Hindu religion , our ancestors were so grateful to nature and all the surrounding things that helped their living. They saw some divinity in those things as a gratitude they worshipped or adored all those agencies such as...RAIN,FIRE,EARTH,AIR.SPACE,ANIMALS THAT HELPED, ETC ETC.
Similarly the GOD OF RAIN is VARUN.
It is the Hindu religions greatest thing that they saw divinity in all the things in the world and worshipped them for expressing their gratitude.
In Indian Mythology we find so many Gods. But one has to read the Authentic Indian scriptures to understand. You should not be carried away by half knowledge or reading some unauthenticated or unauthoritative Books about our Great Indian traditions.
So VARUN is the Name given to GOD OF RAIN.

In old Hindu mythology, Lord Varuna is the God of the Seas/Rain/Water.
In fact, the Indian Navy has adopted a sloka from the ancient Hindu text "Shan no Varuna", meaning 'May the sea-God, Lord Varuna, be kind unto us'--as its motto.
