I mean, does anyone REALLY pay attention to these things? I'd like to start one with a real purpose, but I don't really want to do it if nobody cares about what's being done.

The problem is that from a legal perspective they don't count.

Because of the anonymous nature of the Internet, there is no way to verify that the names on the petition are real.

If you want to start a petition it has to be real, with real signatures, so that when you bring it to the authority's attention they can verify that you didn't forge all the signatures and names.

They can; the AFA (American Families Association) posts on line petitions to its site all of the time and sometimes they get enough signatures to make a difference. One of the ones that were successful was posting for people to protest a network airing a portion of Madonna's special where she would sing "Like A Prayer" while strapped to a huge cross that came down from the ceiling as it was sacrilegious...then got nearly 3/4 of a million signatures and the network still aired her special, but exuded the aforementioned scene.

How can an on-line petition mean anything? I can start one, sign it several thousand times myself using different names and say, "Look how many people agree with me!" Although, all petitions are open to abuse. How many times do people sign petitions? It has been proved that the dead sign petitions and do you care what they think?

I have found them to be a waste of time, mine, the other signatory's, and the author's

I think that a lot of people care, and they do help if they're sent to the proper people.
