What stereotypes they often play on TV do you hate the most? Me personally, I'm sick of latinos always being portrayed as "mexican" & subservient to some affluent white family. There are middle and high class hispanics too you know! & seriously, a lot of us DO speak English, and we're not always the latin lover ready to take some white lady on the adventure of her dreams (sorry).
I also don't like the stereotype they play often (ex Wedding Crashers) that all gay men just want to hit on every guy they see and go for every straight man (believe me, with some of the straight guys they play on TV some of the gay guys can do wayyyy better).
How about you? What stereotype do they play often in television shows and movies that bother you the most?

Token blacks (or whites, asians, women, etc) - the idea that a human being can be reduced to being a fashion accessory to look good in someone's circle of friends. Diversity is wonderful, but the tokens portrayed on tv hardly count since they have to conform to their friends' views.

Gay guys as being really camp - fine if they want to be, but why should they have to look different from everyone else? Surely they should be free to define their identity however they want to, and not be forced to base it on their sexual orientation?

Also offensive is Muslims as terrorists. There are so many nice, ordinary people being hurt by this stereotype. There are violent tendencies on the extreme of any type of world view, just because there are violent people out there.

And then there's the view of Africans as poor, lazy and waiting for a handout. Or uncivilised, like we ride tigers to work and will be totally lost in a big city.

And women: either they spend all day trying to be perfect for the men around them, or they're super-masculine. Have you noticed how whenever there's a female boss on tv she has to be really macho?

Where do I start? I guess any group in society that's in the minority or in a less powerful position socially or economically gets the brunt of the stereotyping, because they have less power to resist it.

That every skinny girl/woman has some kind of eating disorder or is a drug addict. I'm 44, never weighed more than 105 except when I was pregnant, wear a size 2/3 and I'M PERFECTLY HEALTHY!!! Not every skinny person starves themselves or throws up for fun.

With just reading your headline question I had the same response as you do.
I cannot stand to see spanish people portrayed all as "mexican" ignorant and gangsters. Hispanic people are smarter than that and are from more than just one country. At least they got it a little better on desperate housewives.

the spoiled rotten only child......I had to live with that stero-type all my life...and is rather annoying. Not all only children get whatever they want nor do they're parent's have a ton of money.

also the "sexy" doctor type cast......they are annoying as well. And not that realistic either.......

and the Red-necks dumb/not intellegent comedies are annoying as well...not all "hicks" are dumb or slow.......

i tend not to watch most Television in these areas

I'll go with the stupid white guys comment. Somehow it is "ok" to BLATANTLY make fun of white men by portraying them as nerdy.

Its got to be the smart alec kid who thinks they know it all - and usually mess everything up because they dont.

Although the soap opera idiot who thinks violence or ATTITUDE will solve every idiotic problem comes a close second
