Sounds like it could be a Pristella (X-ray) Tetra. Some are completely clear while others have more of a whiteish body. A photo of it would help. You can go to photobucket.com and set up a free account to post pictures.

Is it a saltwateror freshwater fish? Is it a cichlid? Did you ask the former owner? You description is inadequate to give an answer.
Show a picture on line.
Take it to your local pet store.
Take out some books from the library, one that has pictures and descriptions.

With a see through body my first guess would be a glass fish. The yellow and black could easily be the dye they often inject into these poor fish.

Is it a fresh water fish? Maybe its a 'painted glass fish'?
Most of their bodies are see-through, and they come in several colors. Heres a picture..

First thing that came to my mind was a painted glassfish.

There are plenty of books out there that have pictures and descriptions of different kinds of fish.

It could be a guppy but I dont think they have seethrough bodies. It could be a small cichilid but they arent seethrough either. There isnt much to go by from there. Mabey a female guppy
