i shipped a comouter monitor from CA to TX through UPS and when i got it there was a whole in the side of the box.... the monitor is screwed up but we cant figure out how to get them to replace/pay for the monitor. they gave us some form to fill out but then they told us not to fill it out on the phone... then they said ok do it but the paper says we need documentation like something that says how much we bought it for but we got it from a friend for free.... do we have our friend write something thats says we paid $xxx to him for the monitor then just jive it to them? thanks!

If you didn't buy insurance through UPS, you are SOL. If you did buy insurance, then all you'll need is your receipt for the monitor. You will only be covered up to the amount that you were covered by insurance...unless you insured it for more than it is worth. Then you'll only get what you paid for it, or what it is worth after depreciation. Since you got it from your friend, you could possibly send them a notarized statement. But hopefully your friend will still have his original receipt. (long shot, I know)

Although, I don't think they're going to trust the word of your friend...nor should they, since you admit it was free.

They might want an actual receipt from a store, but if you can get a friend to write an affidavit saying that he sold it to you that might help.
