are courses worthwhile for gaining good ground knowledge to get a trainee position etc? any comments from someone whos done it or knows someone who has, would be helpful

depends on the cost! after 30yrs in hvac, I will answer our question,first with a question. Is this what you really want to do? It takes years to master basic electrical, heating and cooling concepts. there are many fields industrial,commercial, residential,also new construction remodel,or service.a 10 day course is OK if its the beginning of a continuing education. with changing technologies journeyman, have update training yearly.as the employer I look for dedication and commitment,and I pay for the training I strongly suggest a local vo-tec. good luck!
