If this is a home setup then yes.....

Make sure the desktop is plugged into the wireless router or switch

Run network set up wizard on both the laptop and desktop

Do not save net wiz on disk just click finish.

Make sure both machines are in same workgroup by...

Right click My computer
Click Name tab
Click Change
Look at workgroup name prob MSHOME
Make sure they are both in the same workgroup.

Reboot both machines

Go to My network places and both machines should be there.

good luck!

yes you can use a bluetooth on the non-wireless desktop and connect the two through that bluetooth. then you can set up the network connection of the pc with the internet connection as shared. that should work

you can buy a wireless AP with lan ports on it, connect your desktop to the lan port and your laptop wirelessly.

Does your laptop have a lan port on it? if yes you can connect them both (desktop and laptop) using a crossover cable.

and no you cant have a wireless network without your desktop having a wireless card installed on it.

Wifi base stations are also routers, and have at least two cat5e ports.
