Evita is the movie adaptation of Andrew Lloyd Webber's stage musical based on the life of Eva Perón. Directed by Alan Parker and starring Madonna, Antonio Banderas and Jonathan Pryce, it was released December 14, 1996 and grossed $50,047,179 in the U.S. box office and $143 million worldwide. links below are for this information and on the life of Eva Peron.
I watched the movie once. It is basically for Madonna fans. But if you are into cinematography...costume design and set design...I highly suggest viewing this film. Wow! Though I like much of Madonna's music...her voice has not the range to support the songs she sang. But I was jaded.... I had already seen the Broadway play which was truly stirring.

"Evita" is about Evita Peron, the Argentinian first lady of the 1960's and 1970's. She was born to a poor family, became a famous actress, and married the president of Argentina. As I recall, she influenced him to make many changes for the poor of Argentina. It was originally a Broadway musical, but Madonna played her in the movie. I've not seen the movie, but I believe the musical was by Andrew Lloyd Webber, so the music has to be good. It includes the song "Don't Cry For Me, Argentina."

"Evita" is the story of the rise to power of the Peron family in Argentina. This was the name of affection that the country used for Eva Peron, the wife of Prime Minister Peron.
As far as the movie is concerned, I remember going to the theater to see it. I didn't really care for it to much. I felt it was one of those movies with a lot of style, but not a lot of substance. Madonnna sings really well, but her acting, as always leaves a lot to be desired. (Antonio Banderas is the best part as the singing (!) narrator.)

The film is not as good as the musical play. Madonna is OK, but she is given some songs that were originally sung by other characters in order to give her more screen time. That ruins the story for me.
The story is about the rise of Eva Duarte, charismatic small town wanna-be actress, to the goddess-like stature of wife of Argentina's dictator, Juan Peron.
