The dell Dimension E520 will suit you just fine and stay within your budget.

Start at http://www.24houredeals.com/Dell-coupons-23-mer.html for the latest coupons and deals.

Make sure you upgrade your video to at least the 256MB nVidia Geforce 7300LE TurboCache and your memory to 2GB Dual Channel DDR2 SDRAM at 667MHz- 2DIMMs. That will insure that your machine will run those games fast with no lag. That link includes a free upgrade to 250GB Serial ATA Hard Drive so you will have plenty of space for your music and video editing.

Good luck

HI mate, I guess you are from the US right? I'm from Great Britain but ill point you to US retailers. First thing whats your budget?
Have you made up your mind that you definitely want to purchase from DELL why not Alienware? any way Specs... What Operating system would you be running Windows Vista?
so many questions sorry lol
My opinion:
2GB ram (minimum)
Intel Core 2 Duo Extreme
120 GB Hard disk (I think Raid would be better - Raid just means merging two identical Hard drives as one, gives better performance too)
Audigy ZX Soundcard
Grahpics is a tough one. I have the Nvidea 8800 GTX as im a hardcore gamer and also a developer. Again budget...... I think you should give us a budget to work of :)

There is no way that you're going to get a good laptop from dell for under $500. So back to your 1000 estimate. I would configure one that has Windows Vista Home Premium, 1gb DDR RAm, at least a 100gb hard drive. You definitely want the 802.11 b/g wireless card. For the best game performance upgrade the internal video card to 256mb ddr ram. deselect any other option and there you go. You should have a great laptop capable of doing everything you wanted to do.

Dell Entertainment PC - (XPS is the same technology, waste of moneY)

Speed - Intel Duo over 2ghz

RAM - minimum 2GB - possibly 4gb for optimal gaming

GRAPHICS - Upgrade to the 256mb Card

Hard Drive - 160-250gb is more than enough

DVD/RW Optical Drive - try to get dual drives if possible

19" LCD minimum - the others are too small for gaming
