My neighbors yell and scream and swear at their kids daily and chase them around the house. I live below them. Somedays I can't even take a nap. I complained to the landlord and they told her they dont' swear or yell at their kids!'. I complained again. They ended up with 3 written warnings and they were still denying it and continued on with this behavior. They landlord finally got mad and told us both to stop complaining!! She said it was their word against mine and to just stop. So I wrote her a note saying that I understand she is frustrated and will not complain again, and instead I would start recording the noise so I had proof. I mentioned that I do have a right to peace in my own home. That very day the neighbors shut up! maybe someone called Social services or maybe the landlord showed them the note. They still are loud and swear at their kids, but not as bad. SO if I DON'T record things, will the landlord think that I was lying after all?

I don't think the landlord thinks that you are a liar, this situation is one of verbal abuse, it is all too common. If I was your landlord I would believe you, and possibly mention the disturbance to my tenants and see if it can't be resolved that way, if not then maybe you are on the right track by recording the incidents for proof if you do contact social services, if you feel that there is any harm being done to anyone in the household then yes it is your responsibility as a caring neighbor to report it, but if it is just a young couple fighting and you see no harm in what they are doing to each other besides the verbal loudness then maybe you may want to mention it to them and tell them that their behavior has its consequences not just on them, but those around them. and see if they can keep their voices down. I mean in actuality it is up to your discretion, but that is what I would do.

Calling the landlord is your big mistake. Call the cops or social services from the get go and let them come out at the time of the disturbance. Your landlord has no desire to evict someone who is paying their rent even if you do tape them. Actually ground floor apts are easier to rent so you might be the easiest to replace. Good Luck and God Bless

Don't confuse ends with means.
Your recording the noise is a means to an end.
Your end, or your goal, is to stop the noise.
If the noise stops without you actually having to record it, so much the better.
You can always record it later when it gets bad again.

Besides, I think your landlord DOES believe you already, but if the neighbours deny it, there's only so much he can do...

Someone needs to call the social services on her. There isn't any reason for her to talk to her kids that way. That is verbal abuse.
Yeah it's okay to get spanked for misbehaving but getting talked to like that is crazy. Yeah you should record that so like that he can't try to find a reason to get rid of you for complaining.

Have some type of back up. Something that can save you in the long run.

Remember if sh** hits the fan you have the proof.!

I definitely think that the landlord believes you. Maybe the reason why they stopped making as much noise was because the landlord told them that you had proof on how loud they were being.

I would still record the noise and the make sure you put the date and time of the recording. I do not think the landlord will think you are lying either way, but I think you should have it in case things are pushed further.

Just record it. It doesn't really matter what they think as long as you have proof. For me, I would rather move somewhere more quiet than to bicker for months on end. Honestly, how happy can you be living with neighbors you don't like and having a landlord you don't trust (or doesn't trust you)?

You can record it, but without their permission the landlord would be the only one you could legally play it for. It wouldn't be admissable in court if you were to try and persue anything with the social worker

Just record it and give it to the landlord then he will know the truth.
