The answer really depends on whose 'we'.
There is however a million websites that would give you a time line of events, but The outbreak of WWII is generally considered to be Sept 1, 1939, when Nazi Germany invaded Poland. However the British Empire, along with France didn't officially declare war until two days later.
As Cokeberg, crudely put it the USA, which is who I'm presuming you are referring to in your question, was brought into the war following the attack on Pearl Harbour, in Dec 1941. Hitler, for the only time throughout the war, then officially declared war on America, much to the relief of Admiral Durnitz & Winston Churchill
Some historians argue that WWII started when Japan invaded Manchuria in '37, whilst others point to Chamberlain's reluctance to save Czechoslovakia, although this is more a precursor for the war.

We, the United States did not start WWII, we only aided, we actually tried to stay out of it as much as possible, but we joined in when the Japanese bombed pearl harbor, which was Dec. 7,1941. The Japanese attack brought the U.S. into the war on December 8. Then Germany and Italy declared war on the U.S. on December 11. Just so that u know, WW2 was started when Germany invaded Poland and there was the Axis Coalition, which ment Germany, Italy, and Japan had each others back and France and Britian had Poland, the invasion took place on Sept. 1, 1939. And don't say America, because America is a whole lot of countries, which would include Mexico, Salvador, Guatemala... ect and that I recall they were not a part of it.

September 1, 1939 when Germany invaded Poland or July 7, 1937 when Japan invaded China. The beginning date is debatable.
