First of all Norton is a resource hog to that i agree...Plus u generally can never uninstall it completely...Try doing it and u'll end up with a corrupted OS...
Second avg, panda, quick heal, etc. are pretty good but the most important thing in all these is that they require constant upgrades and preferably take a licensed copy if ur work is important....
Third, if u know how to format and such stuff about computers the best thing to do is keep ur OS on one drive and all ur documents on the other....so the moment u find that there are too many viruses u just format ur drive with the operating system....no need for antiviruses.....
Fourth, u can even freeze the drive using softwares like deep freeze which prevent any changes from taking place on ur freezed drive....but that wont allow u to store data there either...but it keeps ur OS virus free....

I use eTrust ezAntivirus by Computer Associates. I don't even notice it's there. I've used Norton, Kasparsky, PCcillin and they're all heavy on the resources. Another cool thing about ezAntivirus is that if you're an Optimum Online subscriber, the proggy is free
Believe me, it's no Norton as far as features and what it's capable of doing but I needed something that wouldn't hog my computer. You could also try BitDefender. Try their free online virus scan. I use that one as a 2nd scanner without having another proggy running.
If you'd like, go to PC Magazine online or PC World and check their article archives on antivirus comparisons and see what they say about the biggies.

My second choice was always Mcaffee since the program did not make my computer slow down so much. I have it on my work computer and it dos not slow it down. When I need to get the new anti virus program on my computer I am going to get Mcafee again not Norton as it does make my computer feel like it is not working at times.

Voted the best AV program 2006, there is nothing out there like it, it has no bad point, leaves AVG, Norton, etc... standing, the fastest AV program I've ever used.
Check out my links.

Yeah Norton is a resource hog. Personally I like McAfee. I also hear that AVG is very good.
