The original use for it is for duct work like heating and air conditioning. Believe it or not, there are web sites with instructions and patterns on how to make just about anything with duct tape (clothes, wallets, etc.).

Standard grade duct tape is not a permanent fix for anything (even ducts-use metallic tape). It degrades in sunlight and leaves a gooey residue on anything it is left on. Let that goo harden, and you'll have a tough time removing it.
Still, it's a great all-purpose emergency repair tape.

When you see people with low rise jeans and they bend over and their crack shows. That's where duct tape should be mostly used.

My 14 year old son decided he could put a piece over the hole in his socks and it has gone through the wash and is still stuck on. He thinks he could probably build a house out of it someday also.
