The Enlightenment was a direct result of the French Revolution and is commonly attributed to the Haitain slave Revolution. Look up the Haitain Revolution on wikipedia.org for more information. Voltaire was a famous writer check him out. Good Luck.

Try researching social contract theory; ideas of rights, equality and justice. Rosseau was involved in the Enlightenment, as well as Kant to some extent (his ethical theory says that people have value just because they're people, and you should never treat people as a means to your own ends). The Enlightenment was seen as a triumph of reason over irrationality. Suddenly people thought you could decide everything using reason, including ethical questions like slavery.
