Can you see a therapist without it going to your medical file. A friend of mine wants to go but doesn't want it to be in his file becuase it can affect his ability to get certain jobs in his field of study. Is there a way to go anonymously?

many people seem to have a stigma against therapists. Just because you go to see a psychiatrist doesn't automatically reveal to the world that you're nuts and the people who even bother to look at a medical file know that.

As many people see therapists for a variety of reasons including career coaching or support for quitting smoking or other related issues that are unrelated to any mental illness which still has carries some social stigma, there are really no reasons to fear seeing a therapist. Other than select government jobs, almost no employer can access your medical records & those jobs usually require their own evaluations anyway. I am curious as to what field of study is he in? I have seen a therapist for years & have held both federal & state jobs with no question other than a general reason to which I reply "to ensure optimal wellness & health" & even then the only reason they questioned was due to the high stress of the positions.

But if your "friend" is still concerned, then just pay out of pocket with no physician referral however if someone is digging that deeply into your personal activites, they are probably not concerned about your privacy & will find out regardless. So accept the idea that everyone needs support at some point & not be defensive of the use of therapy as many times the response to the inquiry is more revealing of a person's issues than the seeking of assistance.

Sure. Use a pseudonym (fake name) and pay cash - that is do not use insurance. That'll do it. Therapist information cannot be accessed without written authorization or a court order. The therapist will have their own file, but it will not be released and thus will not be in one's medical file. The not using of one's insurance is critical though to maintain privacy.

Unless he's entering the CIA or FBI, I'm not sure who would be looking into his medical file. Additionally, they would not be legally allowed to disclose any information in those files. (Note I said legally.) Besides, those agencies require their on pych evaluations. Anyway, if he wants to visit a therapist and not have it on his file, he needs to go to one, without a referral from his primary physician and pay for it out of pocket. Then, no one has the records or knowledge of the visits except the therapist. No insurance records either. Anyone looking to obtain the records legally or otherwise would have to know which therapist, out of the thousands out there, he visited.

That's too bad that the thought of someone getting therapy prevents them from being worthy. I would rather hire someone that has had therapy.......we all could use a little.
